TEST “CHARTERS”

From a James Bach definition [WTA #18]:

Charter: it’s a contract between the testers and a client to perform a small amount of work. It must represent a reasonable common understanding of the problem to be solved, actions to be taken (or avoided), and results to be delivered. In the absence of that understanding, a responsible tester should question and re-negotiate the charter.

A way to approach in front of a charter is to be able to say “I accomplished the charter” or “I made good progress toward this charter” or at least “I did good work with respect to this charter.”

The first questions you must answer when you get a charter are:
- Do I understand this?
- Do I know how to do this?
- How do I know if I’m doing it well (or badly)?
- Can I commit to this?

And therefore, if you are providing a charter you should write it to anticipate those questions, and either answer them outright, reduce the likelihood that the tester will make bad assumptions about them, or be prepared to answer them interactively.

As you prepare your mission, consider the following factors: Continue reading TEST “CHARTERS”

HIGHLIGHT FROM AN AGILE COMPANY DOING WELL…

I’ve just had this newsletter from the agile-testing in yahoo groups, that I wish to fix somewhere and which better place than my blog.. The author is Mark German:

Here we promote face-to-face communication between testers, developers and the product owner.

And we have a big wall for radiating information about stories…

Communication starts during the release/iteration kickoff meeting where all team members are encouraged to ask questions about what the PO wants to develop.  This helps the team get a common understanding of what needs to be built and what business value it’s expected to provide.

26th May 2011 - Skype outrage

Today I’ve assisted to the most fatal Skype crash since I’ve started to use it.

Who knows why…? (ref. in the pics..)

After a glance in twitter seemed like I wasn’t the only one hit from the issue.

And even more strange there was a communicate from the company to say the users how to restore from the situation, but almost hidden and unclear to the most.

The patch consists in the deleting a file “shared.xml” which can be found in my mac pc at this path: /Users/{yourusername}/Library/Application Support/Skype instead in windows by running this command %appdata%\skype from the start->run console.

I hope this may help someone of you….

Estimation with Planning Poker

How does Planning Poker work?

The idea behind Planning Poker is simple. Individual stories are presented for estimation. After a period of discussion, each participant chooses from his own deck the numbered card that represents his estimate of how much work is involved in the story under discussion. All estimates are kept private until each participant has chosen a card. At that time, all estimates are revealed and discussion can begin again.

Planning Poker is the best way for agile teams to estimate.

“Planning Poker is a good way to come to a consensus without spending too much time on any one topic. It allows, or forces, people to voice their opinions, thoughts and concerns.”
Lori Schubring, Manager, Bemis Manufacturing Company

“An elegant, useful tool with some really nice touches. I particularly like the multiple column spreadsheet cut and paste. It’s an idea that I expect to see reused in a lot of applications.”
Martin Lloyd, Project Manager, Greenpeace International

“Everyone loves this. Yesterday we all used laptops in the same room (along with one remote user) instead of cards. It’s definitely more fun than using physical cards and solves the problem of revealing cards too soon. Great idea.”
John Hill, Senior Project Manager, JDA Software Group, Inc.

Mind Mapping: what a great tool for a tester…!

Mind maps are, by definition, a graphical method of taking notes. Their visual basis helps one to distinguish words or ideas, often with colors and symbols. They generally take a hierarchical or tree branch format, with ideas branching into their subsections. Mind maps allow for greater creativity when recording ideas and information, as well as allowing the note-taker to associate words with visual representations. Mind maps differ from concept maps in that mind maps focus on only one word or idea, whereas concept maps connect multiple words or ideas.

Domain Authority, page ranking and other info about SEO.

Domain authority is a simple enough concept to understand. It measures the number of quality pages that link to your site domain, and the ways in which they do so. Since it is a way that search engines gauge domain trust, it’s an important part of search engine reputation management.

If you use a search engine optimisation company, you’ve no doubt heard of PageRank and link juice. Page Rank is Google’s own patent for ranking the importance of a particular page, although it is different to the algorithm that decides who gets placed where. Whenever you do a search, even of something quite unusual, you’ll see something like “1 – 10 of about 400,000″ at the top of the Google page. Yet as we all know, it is only those first 10 or so that are important. Few people bother to search further than page 2. The ranking order is decided by Google, but all search engines have a ranking algorithm of some kind.
